Sex Machineguns are probably the only metal band ever to not take themselves too seriously. For that, they are given a huge advantage over every other group in the genre; many casual fans (myself included) turned to the band because we're sick with the doom and gloom hokery of death metal and the outright ridiculousness of power metal. To be fair, Sex Machineguns have borrowed heavily from both subsets, they take the pumping pace of death metal and combine it with the over-the-top guitars and vocals of the dungeons and dragons camp. Their strength lies in their ability to cut the worst parts of both to make the recorded and live performances entertaining and even more importantly, fun.
After breaking up for a couple years, the band has returned with two new members, the bassist from Cali!=Gari and the drummer for the ludicrously terrible Dasein (he is a great drummer though, so no worries). There's no questioning the band's talent, it's pretty safe to say that they are all masters of their instruments and Anchang's voice is still quite unique. The problem for this album instead is whether the music world actually needs yet another Sex Machineguns album. Nearly all of the songs on Heavy Metal Thunder are catchy and well thought-out, the solos are all completely sweet ("Densetsu no Catch Ball"), the gang vocals out in force ("Yakiniku Party"). Unfortunately, they have already delivered just as well on several albums; at this point, the band is starting to sound a little stale.
Heavy Metal Thunder is still a fun and entertaining record, but I can't really recommend it to newcomers since their first two albums still remain unseated as their best work. For old fans who haven't yet grown tired of the plaguing unoriginality of metal, I would definitely suggest you look into this disc. It has plenty of what has made the band so popular with enough new tricks and hooks to keep you from dismissing the effort entirely. I can't really fault the group for sticking to their machineguns; their style has thus far netted them a meaty discography and packed stadiums. I think that it's metal itself that's responsible for any complaints. The band's passion and mastery are appreciated for the shining moments of the album and they remain a rare bright spot in such a trite genre. |
