Melonman are a fairly obscure act and to be honest to look for information on them is to run into a brick wall. There isn't a complete discography or even an official site. Hell, I couldn't even find a picture of the album cover for a long time.
But that's not to say they aren't worth the effort; they're slightly different from what I usually listen to but very compelling nevertheless. This is the only complete album of theirs I have ever had the pleasure of hearing and as far as I'm aware, their only full-length, with all the other releases I've seen being mini albums or singles.
As for how they sound, that's hard to precisely define since they don't really sound like anyone else and they mix many styles, ranging from electronica to dub to rap-rock and a whole load of sound effects. I first heard the song Jet Boy, Jet Girl and fell in love with their quirky style.
The album comes in at just under 40 minutes and all nine tracks are of a pretty high standard. The whole album has a fairly futuristic feel to it and for my money, tracks five, seven and nine are the standouts.
Track 5 (Escaping! Pyramid Fortress Of Puzzle) is a really interesting song, it has a driving beat and uses some interesting sound effects. Then you have the singer's voice over the top of it, giving a lot of different layers to the sound. The best way I can think to put it is that this song is very busy sounding. Hell the title alone is quirky enough to sell it to me.
"Sky Diver" is slightly less driving than the fifth track but it has a nice bassline to it, which creates a real groove. As with a lot of their songs, it has some engrish lines and the lyrics to this one seem to be somewhat stonerish, almost reminiscent of Cypress Hill, an act that Melonman at times reminds me of.
"Jet Boy, Jet Girl" is what interested me in them originally and prompted me to seek out this album. It starts quite laid back and then devellops into one of their signature basslines as the spacey sound effects pile up.
This was released in April 1996 and I think it's pretty tragic that so few people have heard of either Melonman or this album. It's not like much else out there and the closest comparison I could come up with is Cypress Hill, but even this doesn't come particularly close. You will probably either love it or hate it but everyone should give them a try. Like I mentioned earlier it is a very busy sounding album and some people won't dig this. Melonman just doesn't know the meaning of the words "stripped down." As for me, I often find myself listening to the whole album on loop three or four times through - I love it! |
