toddle is the masterwork of Tabuchi Hisako, ex-guitarist of Number Girl and current member of the bloodthirsty butchers. The band's work incorporates elements of both power pop and noise rock, with most songs featuring generous helpings of both, often at the same time. The instrumental talent in the band is undeniable, with years of experience contributing to each facet of the sound. However, Tabuchi's voice has obviously not had the benefit of years of training and is ragged at times. This is a benefit of sorts to the noise rock sections, but unfortunately stands out clearly in the more poppy sections and drags them down somewhat. toddle first formed in Tabuchi's mind in October of 2002 following the breakup of Number Girl. Tabuchi pitched the idea of a band to drummer Yasuoka Hideki (of niumun) and Guitarist Kobayashi Ai (swarm's arm and luminous orange) who joined at the end of 2002 and beginning of 2003 respectively. 7 months after the initial conception of the band, toddle had created 5 songs and played their first show at Shibuya Nest. They continued their activities in the Tokyo area for about a year, but still were without a bassist. In June of 2006, Yasuoka called bassist Ezaki Noritoshi (of RUMTAG and luminous orange) and invited him to play some shows with toddle to see how it worked out. Everything went well, and he was added to the band shortly after. The band first entered the studio at the beginning of 2005, but due to various other projects the band members were involved in, the recording didn't finish until July. The album I dedicate D chord was released in September on the band's own label "World Wide Waddle", followed by an all-Japan tour promoting the CD. toddle is currently playing shows in the Tokyo area. - Graham (published 2005.12.13, updated 2005.12.13) |
