Q: First, could you please introduce yourselves?
We're Manabu Deto on vocals and guitar, Kei Mabuchi on guitar, Norihito Hiraide on bass, and Takashi Katsuura on drums.
Q: Even from the very first demo you released, I could hear great chemistry between you guys. How did you all meet?
Manabu: Norihito and I were childhood friends. Kei was a classmate of mine in high school. Takashi's a musician friend.
Q: "Ogre You Asshole" is a line from the movie Revenge of the Nerds. Why did you choose that as your band name?
Manabu: I asked Eric Judy, the bassist from Modest Mouse, for an autograph, and he wrote "Ogre You Asshole" on my arm.
Q: You've said your influences include Modest Mouse, Built To Spill, and Television. How would you describe OYA's sound?
Chew a lot and spit it out!
Q: What inspires you when writing? And what's the actual songwriting process like for Ogre You Asshole?
OYA: The guitar and bass riffs originate in a jam session and then we flesh it out.
Q: You've made [2 PVs] for your recently released mini album. What was it like making those music videos?
A friend from school helped us. We filmed them in a studio and a university gymnasium.
Q: You currently have some shows set up with 9mm Parabellum Bullet and STAN. What are your plans after that? When can we expect a new release?
OYA: We'll be playing live shows up through August. We plan to record soon.
Q: What has your greatest challenge as a band been so far?
We've been getting more opportunities to play at places where we haven't before.
Q: What musical artists have you guys been listening to lately?
Modest Mouse, Pavement, Sparks, The Shins, Ry Cooder, and Narrator.
Q: Can you name some of your favorite books or movies?
For books, Kuma ni E Tsutara Dousuruka by Hideo Tamate and Bronco Riding by Shinji Ishii. For movies, Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl, Ramblers, Fight Club, and Step Across the Border.
Q: Would you ever be interested in coming to the US to play some shows?
OYA: Of course!
Q: I hope you guys continue to gain the recognition and attention that you deserve. Thanks for taking part in this interview.
OYA: Thank you!
Interview from early 2007.
